Change - Disasters: - A ICICI Communities & Info Change initiative
India
is the worst-affected theatre of disaster in the South Asian region. Drought,
floods, earthquakes and cyclones devastate the country with grim regularity. Ten
thousand were killed in the Orissa supercyclone of 1999, and 16,000 died in the
earthquake that hit Kutch in January 2001. Are these natural disasters caused by
nature's fury?

Literature Database (HazLit):
HazLit is the online library database of the Natural
Hazards Research and Applications Information Center at the University of
Colorado at Boulder. The library of the Natural Hazards Center houses an
extensive collection of social science literature focusing on how society
prepares for, responds to, recovers from, and mitigates natural disasters. This
non lending library is an important resource for all persons involved in
disaster management. The collection includes approximately 17,000 items,
approximately one-third of which are fully annotated in this database. The
HazLit Database is an on-line index that provides bibliographic access only to
that collection. Hazlit is not a full-text database, and the Hazards Center
Library does not loan its holdings to the general public.

The
term cyclone includes all tropical storms. They start as swirls of cloud and
rain that eventually intensify into storms. The Indian sub-continent is the
worst affected part in the world. Although India accounts for only six per cent
of the cyclones worldwide, it records the maximum damage.

RMSI has executed projects to provide high
resolution seismic and hurricane hazard-related databases for regions of risk
round the world. For seismic hazard risk, the data captured includes
geo-technical features, slope and elevation, water table level data, location of
seismic sources and locations of man made facilities. For hurricane hazard the
data captured includes: distance to coast line, slope and elevation, terrain
features and man made features that may alter the terrain natural roughness.

Controlling
Flood through best management practices:
At the present time 130 million
people of Bangladesh are facing a series of environmental problems. The people
are repeatedly confronted by natural and human-made catastrophes such as
flooding, surface and groundwater pollution, droughts, cyclones, riverbank
erosion, air pollution, wetland loss, tornadoes, and coastal erosion. While some
of these environmental degradations and calamities are not directly related to
human activities and land-use practices (such as tornadoes, and cyclones),
others are related to human interactions with the nature.
