After any disaster, the first responders are the local people and local self governments and the district administration. Hence the response capacity of the existing Municipalities have to be strengthened to enable them to react quickly with necessary emergency equipments for emergency response.
As part of the World Bank funded GEERP, GSDMA, in consultation with the Urban Development & Urban Housing Department (UD & UHD) of the State Government has provided emergency equipments to 113 most vulnerable municipalities of the State and 5 GIDC Estates to deal effectively with disaster situations. The equipments consisted of 135 Water Bowsers and 126 Mini Fire Tenders .
GSDMA had received representations from some of the municipal corporations for procurement of smaller, portable and manually driven fire extinguishing systems that are of use in areas and localities where fire engines and water browsers cannot have easy access. It is of utmost importance to have these equipments at the disposal of the various fire fighting departments to enable them to fight fires in smaller lanes where fire engines are unable to reach. Subsequent to this, a decision was taken to procure Water Mist Foam Gun Fire Fighting Equipment for the municipalities and municipal corporations. A total of 71 Water Mist equipments were hence procured and handed over to 18 Municipalities and 8 Municipal Corporations . List provided as Annexure-2.
In 2012, out of the Grant received from the Ministry of Home Affairs towards strengthening of fire services in the State, GSDMA, as per the list provided by the UD & UHD, procured the same set of equipments for 36 Municipalities and 8 Municipal Corporations of the State. The equipments consisted of 31 Water Bowsers and 23 Mini Fire Tenders . In all, 166 Water Bowsers and 149 Mini Fire Tenders have been procured and handed over to 138 Municipalities, 5 GIDC Estates and 8 Municipal Corporations.
